It’s probably not something I should admit out loud or to everyone that follows or stumbles upon this blog but I’m going to anyway. My house is founkey. Yes, that’s my way of saying it’s super funky. I’m talking dirty, dusty, sticky, smelly, stinky. I know in my previous post I talk about embracing your dirty floors and dusty shelves for that oh so precious time with your little ones, but I may have taken that a bit far recently. I mean when your husband (who I believe washed his sheets yearly in college = supa founkey), starts to comment on the cleanliness of your abode…. that might be a sign that it’s time to scrub this joint down.

Jen over at iheartorganizing also got me jazzed up to do some cleanin’ with her May Mini Challenge. I absolutely adore her homemade cleaners and tips for organizing it all – featured below:

Source: iheartorganizing.com

As much as I would love the time to make my own cleaners and keep this place spotless – my life reminds me that it just aint gonna happen. In fact, the lack of time from working full-time + the joy I’m having using my spare time to play with my sweet baby boy is what got this place in it’s current state of founkeyness (if you haven’t already, say it out loud, it’s fun!). So I decided to take some of Jen’s cleaning tips and apply them where possible, with the hope that it will save me time down the road because let’s be honest, there are about a million and two things I’d rather be doing than scrubbing you know what off you know where.

First things first, I had to get my cleaning supplies hoarding under control. With three sinks in this house, it seemed easier to just get three of each cleaner and distribute evenly, however when you run out of one and forget to restock, you’re forced to run back and forth, thus adding more time to an already sucky chore. So to nip this in the bud, I began by taking stock of what I had:

And then I pared it down to one of each of everything that I really needed for this traveling caddy. I keep kitchen cleaners and such under the kitchen sink, so this caddy is more for cleaning bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas.

Here’s what’s in my handy-dandy caddy:

- Pledge Multi Surface Everyday Cleaner + Microfiber cloth: I mostly just use for dusting furniture

- Windex + Paper towels: Mirrors and granite countertops for a little sparkle

- Lysol wipes: Countertops, faucets, toilet seats

- Lysol Power & Free Bathroom Cleaner: Toilets, tubs and sinks. I LOVE this stuff. Lysol claims it has more cleaning power than bleach without the harshness and I believe it. It smells wonderful too. I debated using it to get this horrible spray tan off me but the warning label made me think twice.

- Lysol Disinfectant Spray: I hose the house down with this stuff often. From door knobs to sofas, this stuffs kills the germs and freshens the room. In linking to the site, I saw they have a new scent for Baby’s Room. Anyone tried this? Does it smell better than the original?

- Scrubbing Bubbles: Does wonders for my glass shower door.

- Sponges and scrubbers

So with my caddy all ready to get down and dirty, Jer and I spent Saturday cleaning the snot out of this house and it literally took hours. It really got me thinking – how can I do little bitty chores (I’m talking less than 10-20 minutes) throughout the week so that I don’t have to spend my precious weekends cleaning all day? So I created {drum roll please}… a Working Mama Cleaning Schedule:

Download Customizable Cleaning Schedule Here

As much as I’d love to have a spotless house everyday, that’s simply not possible with my life, but I think this schedule is totally doable. There are the basics that just have to get done everyday like making beds and cleaning up after dinner but then there are the larger chores like cleaning bathrooms and vacuuming floors that will get done throughout the week. Since everyone’s schedules are different I included a link above to download the word doc version of this schedule and make it your own.

Got any working mama tips for keeping a clean house?! Would love to hear em’!

xoxo,

I’ve been trying to think of a good excuse to give you guys for why I haven’t blogged and responded to comments in over 4 months, but then I realized that you probably already know why: I’m a new mama with absolutely no clue what I’m doing who also happens to work full time and then some. My “me-time” has consisted of scrubbing poop off baby clothes, cleaning bottles and pump parts and picking up toys from every square inch of my house. On the forreals though, you should’ve seen how grown out my highlights were… I literally had a thought the other day about many more months it would take for them to be considered “ombre”…. so sad. To my credit, I am learning to get out more and really dedicate some time to myself, but with working full time, I feel guilty when I don’t spend my time off with/around Dylan. I think every working mama can relate to this, so would love to hear how you guys have dealt with this.

OK, OK…enough sap story for one post. Although I’ve clearly still got some baby-mama-drama to work out, I have made great progress over the past few months in organizing all this craziness. I get a laugh at reading through my old posts as I was nesting and I’m guessing you experienced mama’s did too – I clearly had no clue what I was about to get into. Organizing everything pre-baby definitely, absolutely, totally helped me but instead of cleaning every closet in this joint, I should’ve spent more time doing nothing… because gone are those days, friends.

And although I tried to plan ahead and organize for the future, I soooo wasn’t prepared for the “morning marathon”. Hell, I’ve been back at work for over 4 months now and I’m still getting use to it. Getting me ready, getting D ready, feeding D, getting D ready again after he poops/pukes on himself, getting me ready again after D pukes on my outfit, making bottles, loading 6 bags in the car and then heading off to daycare and work… all before a cup of coffee is mother.truckin’.work.

So a couple Sundays ago, I declared that I’d spend 30 minutes “prepping” for the week. I thought about everything that slows me down in the morning and realized that it really revolved around outfits and getting both D and I ready. So while putting away laundry like I typically do on Sunday, I spent a few minutes picking out 5 outfits for both Dylan and I. Since Dylan doesn’t really wear shoes yet, I thought his hanging shoe organizer would be the perfect way to organize his outfits for the week as there is a cubby for each day of the work week, plus one for weekend outfits. Since I store his tops and bottoms in separate drawers of his dresser, this has been such a time saver. It has also really helped ensure Jer doesn’t dress Dylan like a freak. It happens…

So I applied the same system in my closet, but there was absolutely no way I could give up one inch of my shoe storage… gotta little problem in that department. Instead, I simply picked out 5 outfits and slipped a little cord tag that I labeled with the day of the week around the hangers. I LOVE these cord tags from Martha Stewart…that lady knows a thing or two.

By now you know that I love me some organized spaces. Something about everything having its own home and dedicated space just makes me ocd-giddy. But it’s not just about putting all your junk in a bin… it’s about strategically putting what you need, where you need it, and if it happens to be in fabulous bin, well then that’s just a double whammy!

And trust me, having what you need, where you need it, can absolutely help de-stress your life. There is nothing more stressful than a screaming baby in your backseat who decided to decorate his carseat with his poop. Oh wait.. there is something more stressful… it’s realizing that you don’t have any more diapers or wipes in your diaper bag to clean it up. Yeah, that would be my first and nowhere near my last total parenting fail. But ya live and ya learn… and then you stock pile your car with your mom tools. And immediately after this poopisode, I did just that and struck gold with this Laura Ashley Trunk Organizer that I found on Zulily for $15 bucks, although you can also get it via Amazon for $25.

So for my swagger-wagon, I decided that extra diapers and wipes were a must! I also like to tote around some extra paper towels, tissues, hand sanitizer, stroller blanket and flashlight. I also seem to be hording reusable grocery bags, so I thought this would also be a good home for them as well. Ewww, so I saw a stat last week that said 80% of peeps don’t clean their bags.. and grosso me being part of that stat, had to immediately wash them. Do it people… leaky chicken juice is straight up nasty.

I’ve always thought the main benefits to being organized were two fold – (1) You know where everything is and can easily get to it without tripping, digging or cussing and (2) It just looks better and gives you that warm-fuzzy, yet super in-control feeling that you are a woman that has “got it goin’ on!” <insert flamboyant triple finger snap>. Sometimes I find myself organizing for reason #2 – take for example, my recent linen closet makeover. Sure, I could access all of my sheets and blankets while they were balled up in the linen closet, but don’t they just look so much better in neat little labeled bins? And every week (slight exaggeration on how often I change our sheets) when I open that closet, I totally give myself a little mental fist pump because I know I showed that closet who was boss.

So while I still have this full supply of nesting crack running through my super pregnant veins, I thought I would tackle a project that often makes me cringe – the mail/junk/remember-to-do/crap-should’ve-mailed-this-weeks-ago bin. Jer and I are famous, like mega-supa-star famous, for throwing random and important papers into our junk drawer. I think it’s the whole outta-sight-outta-mind concept, but every month I find myself sorting through this crap and realizing I forgot to mail or do something important. So to tackle this chaos, I turned to one of my most favorite blogs iHeartOrganizing for some tips and literally found myself taking a page out of her book… or should I say binder!

So without further ado, I’m proud to introduce to you… The Dorrough Family Binder. The one stop shop for all important family information. Although I totally intend for it to grow with our family, right now it has 4 sections: (1) Meal Planning (2) Contacts (3) Dylan (4) Important Dates. And yes, this is the Martha Stewart binder that I showed you guys a few weeks ago…told ya I had big plans for this bad boy.

I wanted the first section of the binder to house stuff that I might need quick access to for the other sections. Scissors for coupons that I’ve stored in the Meal Planning section, stamps for cards in the Important Dates section, zip-drive and itty-bitty tape measure for… Ok, Ok busted. They needed a home!

The first tab and the most frequented section of this Binder thus far is the Meal Planning section. Since my Relay Foods post, a few people have asked how I meal plan and this my friends is my answer. Sure, there are note pads and free word doc templates for doing this, but I think having your meal plan and shopping list on one piece of paper together is super helpful. So here’s how this goes down:

1. Every Sunday I pull out one of my Weekly Meals templates and in the left hand column plan our meals from Monday – Sunday. In the second picture below, you’ll see I’ve listed out some of our favorite meals for easy reference. This is super duper helpful and without it, I’d probably schedule pizza and spaghetti way too many times.

2. After listing out our meals, I then list out the ingredients I need to make it happen. I also do a drive by on our pantry and fridge to see what else I might need for the week.

3. I then log onto relayfoods.com and either quickly fill my cart from “my favorites” list or search out new items and place my order. (yes, I just grocery shopped in 5 minutes…. it’s life changing!)

4. Finally, I hang up this week’s meal plan in our kitchen for easy reference (and because I think this baby has literally eaten my brain and I can’t remember anyyyyything).

Nothing fancy here… not even images, as I didn’t think my neighbors would appreciate their phone number and address on my blog. So in this section I have printouts with the following:

1. Our neighbors contact info

2. Emergency Info – Police, Fire, Family, Doctor, etc.

3. So I don’t have this in here yet, but one day when I have nothing to do (which I hear will be never, once Dylan arrives), I thought it would be a neat idea to print labels with addresses of those I frequently mail to – family and close friends, and have those live in this section for easy and quick reference.

Being the responsible parents-to-be that we are, Jer and I took a baby class a few months ago as we both have 0% experience with those tiny little people. The class was so worth it and we picked up a ton of information on vaccines, food, and hygiene. And since I have a hunch that we might need to reference this info in T minus 7 days, I decided that it needed a little home in the binder as well.

As Dylan gets older, I think this will also be a great place to house some of his daycare and school info.

So how many times have you forgotten a family member or close friend’s birthday? Sure, saying it on Facebook counts but there are some people in your life, you like to go that extra step for and send a gift or card to. As our family continues to grow, it’s been harder and harder to keep track of all of the dates, so taking another tip from Jen’s binder, I created an Important Dates template for our family:

Directly behind the dates, I use the dual pocket inserts to house cards for the next few months.

So that’s our Family Binder. I’m sure it will grow with time and take on new “chapters” but for now it’s working perfectly and has found a comfy little corner spot in our kitchen junk drawer.

Ugh. I’m embarrassed to even show you this hot mess of a linen closet. I mean it’s ugly… so ugly, I recently sat in front of it thinking about how to fix it and literally starting cheering “U.G.L.Y….you aint got no alibi, you ugly, yeah, yeah… you ugly.” Then aside from realizing that I’m a total loser for actually singing that (while sitting alone… on the floor… in my hallway), I also realized that this closet does have an alibi, and a pretty good one at that. Its excuse is that it’s bin-less, label-less, and down right unloved. But I’ve tried to organize this beast before and obviously failed. The whole sheets in the pillow case idea is brilliant in theory, but since I have 0% clue how to fold a fitted sheet and have no desire to learn, this method just doesn’t work for me. So I decided to turn to my ol’ faithful… a labeled bin. And the result…? A truly loved linen closet. TADA…

Here’s how I tackled it:

Step 1 – Determine its use. My very first step was determining what I wanted to keep in this closet. Jer and I also have a closet in our bathroom for toiletries and towels, so this closet only really needs to house sheets, pillow cases, blankets, and extra bath stuff like shower curtains and mats.

Step 2 – Take inventory. I took everything out of the closet and placed it in piles. Anything that didn’t fall into one of the categories above, went into a giveaway or toss pile. I’m not a fan of giving away (or receiving!) nasty old sheets or towels, so I tossed a majority of the little pile I created. You’re welcome Lousia Goodwill.

Step 3 – Bin it. Even after completing Dylan’s Nautical Nursery, I’ve still been eyeing nautical décor… so of course while I’m browsing through Home Goods this week, these canvas, rope handled bins immediately caught my eye. I didn’t have a use for them in the nursery right now, but as soon as I realized how roomie and stretchable these suckers were… I was sold. These are absolutely perfect for storing linens!

Step 4 – Label It. We wont relive the entire post, but as I told you guys early this week, I got these metal bookplates from the office supply collection of my lady crush – Ms. Martha Stewart. I was so very happy with how well these stuck to the canvas!

We all know Martha Stewart’s got it going on. Aside from her minor legal blip, the lady is pretty much perfect. She can cook, decorate, garden and organize like a champ. Let’s just say it’s “a good thing” she’s not smokin’ hot too – I just don’t think I could stand it. So anyhoo, when I recently came across her office supply line at Staples, I wasn’t the least bit surprised that it was umm… fabulous. I went in for some metal bookplates for our Linen Closet Makeover (which I can’t wait to show you guys later this week) and came out with half her collection… mostly because it seemed like really great quality but I think it also has something to do with the fact that it’s all teal – my fav. And hold the big spenda jokes as the most expensive piece I brought was the binder, which was only $12.99.

So, what the heck am I going to do with all these labels, you may be thinking? Why organize and label the crap out of my house, of course… especially while I’ve got a fully supply of this nesting crack pumping through my veins.

So here’s my plan for putting all of Martha’s office goodies to the test:

Martha Stewart Binder

Jeremy and I are famous for throwing all of our mail and important docs into a bin on our kitchen counter or into the junk drawer… which then I don’t file until months later. So to squash this habit, I’m hoping to build a binder that serves as a one stop shop for everything we need quick access to – weekly meal plan, important numbers, schedules, etc.

Holy smokes, this nesting situation is outta control y’all. Is there ever a reason to clean my oven, refrigerator and completely organize everything “baby” in one afternoon… all while 37 weeks pregnant? Umm, that’d be a no. I’m suppose to be sitting on the couch, eating bon-bons and enjoying this peace and quiet that everyone and their mama has told me that I’ll never experience again. Not on my feet and knees, telling oven grease and dust bunnies to “say my nammmme, say my nammmme, biotchhh!”

Although I’m exhausted and swollen from the organizing mayhem of this weekend, I did have a moment where I visualized myself (yes, as a bird), sitting on my newly constructed nest and letting out a big “ahhhhhh”, because I knew that my baby (bird, in this example) would have a clean, comfortable and organized space to come home to. I’ve gotta give my man Jesus a big shout out for this boost of energy and nesting instinct that hits us pregnant women during the final weeks. I mean how else would one’s oven get cleaned and closets organized? And if your answer to that question is “my husband”, I just laughed out loud.

So as I enter my final weeks of being exhausted, mean, cranky, and borderline miserable pregnant, my main goal has been to get the house and all of Dylan’s stuff uber organized, so that when we bring him home, we can 100% focus on him and all his baby goodness (I’m jaded, I know) vs. moments of “where are the diapers, soothies, bottles and bibs!” Usually, I’ll just attack an organization project head on, but for this one I really wanted to think about how to organize in a way that would really make our lives easier. So although this isn’t “baby tested, mama approved” yet, here’s how I approached it:

Nursery Closet – Originally this closet only had one rack across the top and although I think we’re cookin’ a pretty large fella, baby stuff is small, so that just wasn’t going to cut it. So we installed a pretty simple closet system that I got from Wal-Mart and added some cute bins. And since I washed everything in this closet with Dreft, I can frequently be found sitting in front of it, just a huffin’ in that sweet baby smell. Suppose there are worse things to huff than baby clothes…

Ok, ok… sure you could just peek in the bins to see what they’re packing, but to make life easier, and ensure Jer knows where everything is, I added a few labels.

Again, not yet “baby tested, mama approved”, but I think these clothing size organizers are going to be super helpful, especially since whoever determines the size of baby clothes these days is definitely huffing something a little stronger than Dreft. I’ve got a few newborn onesies that I guarantee Dylan’s head won’t fit through. And… que the “that baby is not gonna be wearing newborn clothes” comments that I keep getting. Yes, I’m huge. We know this.

Also, since I’ve become the dooms day prepper of burp clothes, I thought these guys should have their own little labeled home as well. No clue why I feel the need to hoard these, but I do.

Aside from a super organized closet, I also thought it would be helpful to have organized “stations”. For the changing area in Dylan’s room, I made the top drawer of his dresser the diaper station and used some nifty drawer organizers from Wal-Mart to sort all of his baby butt and grooming stuff.

And so we’re not constantly running up the stairs like crazy people, with poop and pee on us (although I might pay to see Jer like this once), I also decided to setup a changing station downstairs. Since we bought the one pack-n-play that doesn’t come with a built in storage system (DOH!), we got this diaper attachment from Amazon that clips right to the side.

I actually think this one might be more useful than the built-ins, because we can actually see when supplies is low and it has several compartments for his stuff that Bo can’t jump up and steal.

Finally and probably the most difficult to make room for, was a kitchen cabinet for Dylan’s bottles & bottle cleaning kit, eating utensils and eventually food. Although we’re going into this thing with our breastfeeding flag flying, we’ve been given several tins and bottles of formula, so they got their own bin too.

So I think we’re finally ready to do this. Now if I could just be as mentally prepared. I just started reading “The Happiest Baby on The Block” yesterday, so at least we’re making some progress in that department

Being the mama-to-be that I am, I’m constantly looking for new tools, apps, & websites to make my life easier, as I know it’s about to get super duper busy. But there are some necessary evils like emptying the dishwasher, washing clothes, and going to the grocery store that unfortunately someone still hasn’t figured out how to make an app do for us yet – trust me, I’ve searched. And of those three – going the grocery store tops my hate list because it’s literally an exhausting four step process: (1) planning whatcha gotta get (2) driving to multiple stores to get everything (3) SHOPPING for at least 30 minutes (4) driving home & putting it all away. Ugh… typing that made me tired. I can literally think of 1,765 things I’d rather do with this hour and from what I hear, once Dylan arrives, an hour back will be oh so needed.

So when my manager, Lisa, told me about a way to get all of my groceries (AND local produce!) without ever stepping foot in a grocery story, I just couldn’t believe it. I mean how could this exist and every Richmonder and their mama’s cousin’s pizza-boy not be using it? Could it really be this easy? I just had to find out!

Well the very next week I tried it and when I rolled up to the pick up location at my work, I saw this sign on the truck confirming just how easy it is: “Buy your groceries at RelayFoods.com. Pick up your food here”. I think they need one more conversation bubble that reads “Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy”… because that my friends is literally what this experience was like.

So here’s how my first Relay Foods shopping experience went down:

1. I started by meal planning. I’m a weekly shopper, so I plan out exactly what we’re having for dinner and then list out the ingredients for each dish separately. I also list out the the staples and stuff we need for breakfast and lunch. If I’m feeling froggy, I’ll also look up some new recipes and figure out what I need to make it happen.

2. I then went to relayfoods.com and started searching for the items on my list. I’ll admit that I was pretty skeptical that they wouldn’t have the brands I like or the processed foods I hold dear to my heart. The marketing is very local/organic/healthy focused – which don’t get me wrong, I totally dig and buy regularly, but I gotta show some love to my sugar coated cereals too. So I was pleasantly surprised when they had 99% of what I needed. The 1% missing was my favorite flavor of preggo pasta sauce, but I daringly tried a new flavor and actually really liked it.

3. After I added everything on my list to my cart, I simply reviewed my order, provided my information & pick up destination and clicked “order”. Within minutes I received an email confirmation of my order and reminder on when/where to pick up. Directly after checking out, I also had the option to save all of my recently purchased items to “my list”, so that next week’s order would be a breeze… and boy was it. Here’s a screenshot of the experience – all I had to do was hover over the item and increase each quantity to 1. There is also the option to refill automatically, but I just haven’t been able to commit to that level of our relationship yet…

4. Then on Monday around 5pm, I simply swung by the pick up location at my work, gave my name to a super friendly dude named Seth and within minutes I had all of my groceries in my trunk ready to roll. Seth gave me my printed invoice and I was outta there! I LOVE that they have a pick up location at my work and one near Jer’s too.
Pizza Tonight – A DIY pizza kit that comes with fresh dough, seasoning and pizza sauce. Jer and I had a blast making this, even attempting to throw the dough above our heads to shape it, randomly singing one verse of maybe the only Italian song(?) we know “when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s…” Of all the dumb stuff we do, this is one of those moments I was forbidden to record

I encourage you to check out that link and see how much pesticides are on non-organic fruits & veggies these days. If you’re not going to eat the skin, do whatev’s but if you eat it and don’t supa dupa scrub it, then go organic. That’s my rule of thumb, anywho.

Did anyone happen to catch this article in BHG last year? Well I did and have been dreaming about creating my very own wrapping station since. All of my wrapping paper supplies used to be shoved into the corner of the guest room closet and every time I wanted to wrap a present, I had to fight through the clutter. What’s worse is in order to dodge the mess, I often just went to Target and bought new paper, bags, tags, etc. Can you say super duper wasteful? I can and I was.

So after seeing this article again on Pinterest, I felt inspired to create my very own wrapping station! After all, I LOVE giving and wrapping gifts, so why not dedicate a little space to them.

The secret for this station is definitely the over the door rack, which is actually a Panty Door Rack. You can find it at chefscatalog.com for $35!

Here’s my take on this super smart space saving idea:

Usually I like to tweak ideas I find online or in magazines to make them my own a little, but I loved everything that about this idea, so I copied it to a T:

- Top two shelves are dedicated to ribbon and I also added a jar to hold gift tags. The ribbon is lined up so it’s super easy to unwind and snip.

- Third shelf houses easy to access tape and scissors. I also really liked the idea of draping tissue paper over the ledge to ensure it doesn’t get ruined while tucked away in bags.

- Finally the fourth shelf houses everyday wrapping baby and gift bags. To secure the bags, I took a tip from the BHG article and wrapped a strong rubber band around the rack. I also added a little section at the bottom for upcoming birthday cards.

What tips do you have for organizing gift wrap? I’m all ears!!!!

Can “make my life simpler” be a New Years Resolution? Yeah.. it’s pretty broad. How about “organize my home in a way that makes life simpler”? I’m kind of liking the sound of that, especially since I’m T minus 5 months away from my life getting uber complicated. Since I’ve never been a rockstar at keeping New Years Resolutions (because umm… I’ve never lost the 15 lbs nor stopped eating the junk food I promised myself I would), I’m going to make every effort to show this one who’s boss. Then maybe when resolution time comes around next year, I’ll actually be successful at dropping the extra lb’s Baby D’s Mickey D’s is puttin’ on me.

So earlier this week, I made a list of all the spaces I want to organize before Baby D arrives, and I’ve already crossed off 4 of them! Woo Hoo!!! Not sure when it’s suppose to happen for sure, but this may be the start of the “nesting” phase folks…

Organization To Do’s:

#1 Organize Entryway Closet

#2 Consolidate 3 junk drawers into 1

#3 Create & organize an extra storage space in the Laundry Room

#4 Organize Kitchen sink cabinet

#5 Organize make up drawer

#6 Create & organize a “Baby Station” (a command center for all things baby) downstairs

#7 Organize the Freezer, Fridge & Pantry

#8 Organize Kitchen drawers

#9 Organize & decorate the nursery… ekkkk!

#10 Organize Guest Room/Craft Room closet

#11 Organize Bathroom cabinets

#12 Organize Nightstand

#13 Organize Desk

#14 Organize Mail Station

#15 Organize Master Bathroom closet

#1: Organize Entryway Closet (for $0!)

Since this is the only closet downstairs, it just has to be multi-functional. It’s smack dab in the middle of the floor plan – so although its main purpose is to house coats, it also has to house miscellaneous items from the living room, bathroom and laundry room. A closet like this can be very dangerous for housing ummm… everything, including junk, so I really had to put some thought into how to best utilize this space.

Here’s how I approached it:

Shoes: ugh…this was just painful to look at and impossible to find the shoes we needed. This is really just where we keep slippers, snow boots and older sneakers. All other shoes are slightly more organized in the master closet. Anywho, this just wasn’t cutting it so I started thinking about buying a shoe rack but realized I have a gazillion little racks around the house that could do the trick. The one I chose use to be in our gym. I don’t think it’ll be missed…

Coats: To create more space, I moved the lighter coats that we’re not currently wearing to the guest room closet. Since we hang our everyday coats near the door, this closet now only houses “other” seasonal coats. I can dig it…

Bins: So I had a few extra bins laying around that I thought would work well here. Before deciding what would live in them, I took everything out of the closet and put it on the steps in groups. Since this closet is so close to the living room and TV, I decided I would dedicate 1 bin to DVDs and 1 bin to games and controllers. The vacuum and other cleaning tools also call this closet their hizzouse so I also dedicated 1 bin to all it’s peeps – aka, the vacuum’s parts. Finally, I had a couple gloves, hats and scarves leftover, so I dumped them into their own bin and gave em’ a spot on the new shoe rack.

I’m really not sure how we ended up with 3 junk drawers, but as soon as I started getting confused as to what lives where, I threw in the towel on this notion. As I did with the closet, I laid every item from the 3 drawers on the table and was able to group them into piles. The items in the picture above were things I thought should live in the “official junk drawer” which is in the kitchen. The rest of the stuff, which was light bulbs, batteries, extension cords, etc. moved to bins in the laundry room. Oh and I got these bins from Marshalls for less than $4 each! They have a really nice rubber bottom so your “junk” doesn’t move around. These would also be great for organizing a large utensil drawer. Richmonders’: These are currently at the Cox Road Marshalls on the second row, back end cap. This Marshalls also has a lot of really great larger storage bins as well.

#3: Create & organize an extra storage space in the Laundry Room

So this is project #1 of the Laundry Room Makeover, coming soon. Jer and I recently joined Costco, which we’ve dubbed “the super secret savers clubs” because we’re umm.. geeks who say stupid stuff like that. But on the forreals, I’ve seriously got enough toilet paper and paper towels for the next 6 months. That’s wassup y’all. Honestly though, this rack has been a super helpful storage system. I’m still working on making it look a little better but it’s been a great place to store paper products, larger cleaning supplies and appliances that I want easy access to. This room is connected to the Kitchen, so it’s also great pantry overflow storage.

#4: Organize the Kitchen Sink Cabinet

This took me less than 5 minutes but has already saved me time. I’ve organized the cabinet into rows, so that I can easily grab the bottles. Row 1 = Floor Cleaners / Row 2 = Glass Cleaners / Row 3 = Counter Cleaners. The bin was a easy way to group smelly good sprays, dusting stuff and disinfectants. The drawer below the cabinet also got some love and now just mainly houses bags.

Looking at this honestly makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I know, I live a crazy exciting life… huh? But think about how much time I can save in the morning, knowing exactly where everything is. No matter what type of clutter you have, chances are you can group your stuff into similar piles and then all it takes is a cheapo bin or plastic organizer. I got the one above for less than $10 from Target.

So with almost half my list crossed off, I’m feeling pretty good about this year’s resolution. Every project above took me less than 30 minutes and I really am already saving time… which I guess means I’m making things simpler!
